National Image Salon 2018

The Professional Photographers of Canada (PPOC) holds a National Image Salon competition each year.  Accredited professional photographers in the organization can enter up to 4 images to be judged.  Less than half of the submissions will make it into the salon (scoring an ‘Accepted’), perhaps 15% will score ‘Merit’, and very few will reach the ‘Excellence’ level.  The images that make it into the Salon are printed in a coffee table book of inspiration, which showcases the ‘Best of the Best’ of Canadian professional photography for the year.  A panel of 5 Master Photographer judges determine which images make it in.

I earned my first accreditation in Fine Art photography in January 2016, which was just in time to enter into that year’s National Image Salon competition.  I have been fortunate to have images included in the 2016, 2017, and now 2018 Inspiration books.  In total, there are 7 of my images ‘hanging’ in the Salons, 3 of which scored Merit.  

Each year, I have consulted with my dear friend, Edith VanderKloot, a Master photographer and working artist.  She was my mentor, my friend.  On family day this year, she suddenly passed away.  It was just days before the National Image Salon judging, and it was a completely gut-wrenching shock.  We had been conversing over email and planning a coffee date.  I was devastated to lose her.  She was a huge inspiration to me and so many others.  Her obituary can be found HERE.  

Edith really encouraged me, and I continue to want to make her proud.
