HONOURING MOTHERS THROUGH PHOTOGRAPHY | Calgary Family Photographer

There are few things more meaningful than coming together to celebrate a mother. Whether it’s for a milestone birthday, a special gathering, or just a rare chance to have the whole family in one place, these moments deserve to be remembered.

Recently, I had the privilege of photographing a family who did just that.

Their mother was turning 88 years old, and her children, grandchildren, and extended family gathered from across Canada—and even as far as Paris—to celebrate her. It wasn’t just a party. It was a way to honour her life, her resilience, and the love she has poured into her family for decades.

The morning was filled with warmth, laughter, and shared stories.

A Morning of Togetherness

With chefs in the family, breakfast was more than just a meal—it was a beautiful act of togetherness, prepared with love. Caring hands assembled and plated gorgeous food, while the stories flowed freely - memories of shared traditions and the small moments that defined their family history.

There was no rush, no pressure. Just connection, laughter, the beautiful french language!

Sharing Stories & Preserving a Legacy

One of the most beautiful parts of the day was when they gathered around old photographs, piecing together an album of their mother’s past.

As she lifted each photograph and document, she shared stories—of her childhood, her journey, and the moments that shaped her. She had endured unimaginable loss, including losing her own mother to Auschwitz when she was just five years old. As a Jewish family in occupied France during WWII, they faced overwhelming hardship. Yet here she was before me, 88 years young, surrounded by the adoring children and grandchildren who are her legacy.

This day wasn’t about revisiting sorrow. It was about honouring strength. It was about celebrating resilience.

The stories she told, the way her children and grandchildren listened, the love that filled the room—these were the moments worth capturing.

A Family United in Music

Later that day, two of her grandchildren picked up a guitar and started to play and sing. What began as a few quiet songs soon had others joining in on the singalong. Voices rose, laughter echoed, and in that moment, it was clear—this wasn’t just a birthday celebration. It was a reflection of a life well-lived, surrounded by love.

This is why I love documentary family photography. It’s not about staged moments. It’s about the real, unfiltered beauty of family life—the hugs, the meals, the music, the laughter.

A Gift That Grows More Meaningful With Time

After this session, I kept thinking about how rare and special it is to have multiple generations together in one place. It doesn’t happen every day. And when it does, it deserves to be documented.

This session was for an 88th birthday, but the truth is, a photography experience like this is a meaningful gift for any mother—at any age.

So often, we search for the perfect way to show gratitude for the women who raised us, supported us, and shaped our families. A photo session isn’t just a gift for today—it’s something they will treasure for years to come and that future generations will one day hold close.

With Mother’s Day approaching, this is the perfect time to create something beautiful for your mother, grandmother, or even yourself as a mother.
